That is somewhat true, but a weak argument. UA could have said "Save 20% off awards to Hawaii if you SIGN UP for MP Explorer Card between now and XXXX" if new business versus "thanks" was the motivation. More likely UA desires to KEEP customers too, in part by reminding them of the valuable benefits of card ownership. Speaking of which, just 10 minutes ago I got an email reminding me of "valuable benefits" for using my Chase card - and reminding me to always use it for purchases. In any event, I see this 20% HI fare sale once about once per year, open to all customers. This time it's a benefit to card holders, but only some card holders. I think someone in marketing more likely just forgot about PP. Of course, Chase is making it near impossible to even possess a PP card let alone use it, with the seemingly unending fraud going on lately (discussed in another thread) requiring replacement cards.
