My question is if I report it lost and request a new card I am assuming it will be a new card with a different number and trigger the 24 month clock which I want to avoid. (correct ?)
I do not want to outright just cancel it as I had it close to 25 years and it helps my FICO.

Call and ask to downgrade it to the no-fee MilesUp card, assuming you can. They'll mail you a different piece of plastic with the same number, and I think that will not reset your clock, although I'm not positive. Alternatively, you can claim you have the card in your possession but need a replacement (e.g., numbers are no longer legible due to some kind of damage, or it fell down into an air vent in your house and you can't reach it or something like that).
