It's not entirely unreasonable, as it's something that some of UA's competitors provide.
Off the top of my head: AA provides IROPS protection to its own and OW flights, even when booked on separate tickets; CX provides separate ticket protection between its own (CX/KA) flights; and BA provides nothing (unsurprisingly).
