I guess this also helps them enforce the rule that you can't use the companion coupon on a Saver fare. Recent attempts would only apply the coupon to value and higher.
True that! But it's also good to know that free tickets using promotional coupons (all types including the companion) can still be upgraded one class by paying the "accommodation fare." You need a good agent who will "manually price" the ticket, by first selling (for example) and a free Acela business seat using the coupon, and then selling the upgrade to first with cash.
