Every-time I've offered to gate check my bag before they announced anything (and even if they didn't) I've always been met with a courteous "Of course" or "Yes" or "Sure, what's your seat number"? Must have been an off day for this particular gate dragon, Delta would be wise to kick them to the unemployment line.
