I’m glad AA was supportive when your mom died, and sorry you’re having a challenge trying to change your ticket now - but the change fees etc. are pretty much AA policy.
By the way, the best thing to do when you have an agent who seems rude, uncaring or misinformed is to hang up and call back, hoping you get someone a bit more helpful to your goals. But:
Normally, you’d have 24 hours to cancel your original ticket. At this point, the usual option would be to exchange the original ticket for the new, paying the change fee and any difference between the original and new fare.
The former is dictated by your detailed fare rules (you can see those during the booking process by following the link offered, - possibly $400?) and the latter shouldn’t be significant this far out, given Eid al Fitr is early next June (3-4).
