Don't know how generalizable this is, but for another data point: At PDX I went to the ticket counter and said I'd normally do the standby benefit at the gate, but wanted to ask at the counter because I was checking a bag - it wasn't a full flight, so the agent confirmed me and give me a new boarding pass and got me and me checked bag on the earlier flight.
