A bit OT, but while the US tax added to the advertised price is very annoying, I think it is a fundamentally good thing. It makes it very clear how much the government is getting out of the transaction and makes it harder for tax increases to be implemented. I know GST is on your receipt but it is pretty much otherwise invisible.
It seems like leaving the tax off until the purchase is totaled actually makes it
easier for tax increases to be implemented. We've had six 1/8- and 1/4-cent sales taxes added here in the past five years.
