A bit OT, but while the US tax added to the advertised price is very annoying, I think it is a fundamentally good thing. It makes it very clear how much the government is getting out of the transaction and makes it harder for tax increases to be implemented. I know GST is on your receipt but it is pretty much otherwise invisible.
I don't really care about the tax, I just want to know how much the can of Coke actually costs without needing a calculator and a table of all the sales tax rates of the US. If I can't walk out of the shop with it for the price suggested at the shelf, then it's not the actual price.
