Anyone sophisticated enough to book a Bucharest to Phoenix trip in order to gather Tier Points (and no doubt routing via London, Helsinki, New York and Los Angeles) can't realistically play the "I'm a naive traveller and was terrified by the thought of an extra document check en route" card IMHO. Such itineraries are for grown-ups!
