Sintra is a nice day trip from Lisbon.
Porto is no longer gritty thanks to tourist euros. Some of the hotels you're considering are far from everything.

Sheraton Lisbon is in a decent location, Altis Belém is also in a great location right on the river. It's also smaller than the Sheraton.
I won't say much about choosing north or south, each has much to offer. Just two other thoughts: The OP should not miss Evora, east and not far from Lisbon. And on accommodations, I recommend that he look into staying in a couple of Pousadas. They are generally historic, focus on regional Portuguese cuisine, and quite comfortable if not luxurious.

And if he heads north, a highlight would be a stay at the Bussaco hotel. It's an unforgettable experience in many respects. Details on their website and other sites.
