Residential properties also offering resort

This thread was prompted by yet another introduction of a residential cum resort locale in Hawaii, the Timbers Kauai.

Especially in the high-end, upscale brands (Rosewood, Auberge, Four Seasons, etc.), the combination of residential sales (of various ilk) with resort / hotel accommodations is a well-established trend. Such that it must be working because there are more such venues introduced every year. But, I confess it gives me pause. I have stayed in several of these and have no particular complaint although the shortage of hotel accommodations at Rosewood's Chileno Bay is annoying. I am yet squiffy about this combination of resort / hotel / ownership because I will never be more than a guest, never an owner and imagine I might be considered second string therefore which does not appeal considering the garganuan rates paid by hotel guests.

Plus I am not copacetic about renting a residence instead of a hotel suite/residence given decor and comfort issues. In some such venues, residential rentals are much less expensive than resort bookings and, well, this comforts me some. Las Ventanas al Paraiso is one such.

What say you all?
