Tipping and adding tax to the price only when paying the bill are two of my real pet hates of traveling in the US. Just feels sneaky and underhanded.
A bit OT, but while the US tax added to the advertised price is very annoying, I think it is a fundamentally good thing. It makes it very clear how much the government is getting out of the transaction and makes it harder for tax increases to be implemented. I know GST is on your receipt but it is pretty much otherwise invisible.
