I ended up calling HR at my current company and, strangely, they said I had 18 years of service going back to 1999 but that my hire date was in 2008 when Company A was acquired by Company B. Odd. Anyway I put in 2008 as the hire date and left it at that. Thanks for your input Zitsky and mnbp!
