drvannostren, just curious, you are able to do it with HGH-PEK OJ? if so you can find some cheap return flights from China to SE Asia on MH/Air Asia/Scoot. Sometimes CZ offers pretty decent deal for flight out of Shanghai and nearby area as well.
i'm unable to find deals transferring DTW so maybe the fare class to DTW is rare and high? probably worth going to ORD?
I'm also unable to find back-tracking deals... i remember somewhere above has posted about restriction on this? so you can't go back from ORD-YVR.
