I have a cheap revenue ticket booked from IAH-KOA via SFO. I’m only a UA gold, so I chose to redeem 27.5K miles for a one way upgrade they took the miles and put me on standby. My IAH-SFO flight cleared but the KOA hasn’t. What happens if the KOA flight doesn’t clear? Will the refund the miles or only the difference in a domestic continental US upgrade vs Hawaii upgrade (most likely). I am a 1MM on UA from PMCO and the last time I used miles, they didn’t deduct them immediately. I guess that is a new change? Thanks for the help.
