I always prefer the ticket stock. Much better than that slippery thermal paper from the kiosks. Also, the thermal paper has very limited shelf life (i.e. printing fades quickly and paper becomes discolored), which is bad for those of us who like to save our boarding passes from major international flights for posterity.
The ticket stock AA uses is also thermal paper. I think the question is why AA doesn't just use plain white cardstock in the ticket agents' printers.
