I've heard the same thing. No word yet officially on groups/meetings.
I assume that spend on up to 3 rooms will qualify since the points (but not elite credit) also can be earned under current and new Marriott Loyalty Program rules. I don't know how spend will qualify for groups/meetings.
It will be what it will be. We'll know soon enough!
