Nothing uncommon about that with a hub to hub flight. Whenever I've been on ORD-IAH (or vice versa) I've been offered far "greater" (distance) SDC options including SFO, LAX, PHX, EWR, SEA and even BOS. I did wind up doing IAH-EWR-ORD once as the IAH-EWR had lie-flat seats

That's my point though. July 4th has to be one of the quietest days to fly (the ORD-DCA flight I switched to was showing 2/12 in first, DCA-IAH 4/16), and the connections that were given to me were identical to doing a search on united. I was hoping to see something (crazy) like ORD-LAX-IAH. But again, I was on a K fare, I'm guessing you fly much higher.
