Air traffic control specialists used to have fam(iliarization) trip privileges wherein they rode the jump seat and observed air traffic control from the customer perspective. My FAA career was not in Air Traffic but I did do a year-long detail in the program and got to take a fam trip (ANC-SEA-ANC). Fascinating experience.
