Yes, I think it is likely that this was either an IT or a training thing, but the front desk was able to find my platinum certificate, and remove my internet charge when I checked out. Still they had quite a long time to train their staff, and do the IT work, so I am not letting them off the hook.
As for the Lounge benefit, I have been in some Sofitel Lounges that were much better than Fairmont Gold Lounges and they were not over run with extra guests. On the other hand, the Gold Lounge at the Banff Springs at Christmas time, can’t really handle any more guests, so I see your point.
