BA lounge agents can, in fact, verify OW status. However, for non-BA FF accounts this involves a call to a OneWorld desk person, who in turn has to call their contact at the airline in question (i.e. AA). As it is a relatively time-consuming process, agents are not extremely willing to do this.

BA's system can only verify/show status for BAEC accounts. For all others, they have to
manually enter/select the status.
