Sounds like the Brighton Homewood Suites might be your best best based on everything you're doing. It's a little farther from DTW on Friday night, but it's closer to your swim, as well as Flint. It is a bit farther from Hillsdale though. The Ann Arbor Hampton West is a good location, but I wouldn't pay the extra.
I think the weekend I'm looking at may be move-in weekend for school in Ann Arbor. Aug 17-20? That might be why hotels there are a little higher.
I'll definitely let the hotel know that I'll be a *very late* arrival, so they don't cancel or give away my room.
