For a domestic flight, it should be 60 minutes prior to departure (not prior to boarding), pretty much as a rule, because that’s when the gate agents tend to arrive. There’s nobody to ask before that. I imagine your gate agent was exaggerating a little bit.
And, yes, there’s really no point asking about VDBs in the lounge. The best you can really hope to get is whether or not the flight is oversold. The rest of the information in the computer is often out-of-sync with what the gate agents are doing.
