Presumably it is the airlines responsibility to have accurate information, so actually totally the opposite of what you are arguing. If the airline stores the information you send them securely, then they are complying. Not sure about the German passport copy laws, maybe you'd care to share a source for that info? Seems some people on here are a bit bitter, after rushing to book tickets without being 100% meticulous with their own information in the first place, and then blame (a rather generous) airline, for following up on it!
