On 26 June 2018 I had this B737 AMS-CDG flight with KLM. Most pax are already seated, and then this lady comes in with a trolley that probably was 60x40-45x40. Clearly one level above max hand luggage size. She tries to put it in the bin. It does not fit - the bag is too thick/high for the bin. FA comes in. FA suggests to get some stuff out of the trolley into the smaller bag she had. Then various attempts by FA+lady to squeeze the trolley in the bin. I was waiting to hear the plastic to crack. In the end, it just fitted and the bin hatch could be closed. Not any feedback of the FA to the lady that she never, never should bring anything like this as hand luggage. On the one hand I understand that the FA solved the issue like this - putting the bag in the hold would costed much more time and probably have delayed the flight significantly at this point. But a) there clearly was not any enforcement at the gate on hand luggage size by KLM, and b) this particular KLM guest may think she will get away with this many more times to come. I would have at least expected the FA to indicate the passenger at stake was not following the normal rules and could have created major problems for the 160-180 people on the flight.
