I have managed to book specific SPG hotels via OTAs (where I had booked directly via SPG previously) and just through getting to know the reception staff with some polite conversation still managed to get looked after with room upgrades and lounge access. A bit of charm and politeness can go a long way as well as hinting at further stays for myself and potentially colleagues.
