I've split off a companion after they've been upgraded. They did not lose the upgrade. However if something then occurs to require rebooking they get put back in Y. There's nothing that says once you split, an already upgraded companion must go back to Y. Only time that is true is if you change to no longer flying on the same flight as them. Of course I can bet if 100 of us called, we'll get 100 different answers on this.
Update, both UG’s cleared this morning as expected. I do agree that the FOs UG probably won’t be taken away. When DMs and PMs are flying after 1/31 and they may already have C+ UGs or FC UGs and then drop down to FO/GM/or no status, IIRC their UGs aren’t taken away unless there is a schedule change or a voluntary change, so I don’t see why this would be any different. I’ll call DL later when I get a chance and see what they say.
