I shiver when some US TSA Agent insists I remove my passport from my pocket at the body-scanner (happened a few times) and place it on the belt for scanning ... NOOOOOOO!!! It’s too precious to be out of my hands!
I find TSA will always let you hold items in your hands going through the scanners. Useful for holding your passport, but also any items you found in a pocket between filling your trays and lining up for the machine.
