Fwiw my experience growing up is pretty much identical to bensyd's in that most people I know would leave a 5-10% tip at restaurants, kind of a round up to a near full amount kind of thing. That would go up or down depending on service. I would agree that I don't tip tour guides, bell staff etc and if a service charge is on the bill then there's no further tip needed.
