That's a good question. Did you try contacting CA before your departure from PPT/before the CA flight was to take off? They may have been willing to change the ticket, depending on the fare conditions, for a fee but most airlines once you no show have little or no obligation to you at all.

You did try to plan to be safe and things went south but that is the risk you take on separate tickets.
