Unfortunately for you, you learned a very expensive lesson. You never had a connection. The two flights had nothing to do with each other, and Air China simply assumed that you were a no show. Neither they nor NZ owes you anything, though NZ may throw you a token gesture. If you have travel insurance you may find that you’re covered for a few hundred £/$/€ but don’t get your hopes up.
