Frankly if your main concern is status, I see no reason why anyone would want to credit to FB vs SkyMiles, even if you live in Europe. If you live in the US, there's no reason at all to pick FB. DL Gold is basically identical to FB Gold, with the added advantage of better treatment and upgrade odds on DL flights. If you can hit Platinum on DL, you'll get similar treatment to FB Platinums, but again it's easier to earn. You also get choice benefits, which at a minimum is 20K miles every year.
Unless you're regularly redeeming for La Première, I wouldn't worry too much about that.
Thanks for your reply! This is what I have suspected. One thing I like particularly about SkyTeam is that there are reciprocal elite benefits onboard partner airlines (DL elites flying AF/KL and vice versa), which is non-existent for Star Alliance carriers (which is only limited to airport benefits). I will start seeking SkyMiles elite status next year then
