Try staying near but not in Fort William, for example in Spean Bridge or nearby. Fort William itself is not very bucolic but the surrounding villages are pleasant. From there you've got easy access by car to Glencoe, along the Great Glen to Loch Ness and Inverness, a bit south along the A86 (a reasonable road) towards the Cairngorms and some distilleries (Tomatin does a good tour if you want to do just one distillery tour) and you can get to the western coast fairly easily too.
For example, a couple of months ago I had a pleasant stay at the "Smiddy House" Bed & Breakfast in Spean Bridge.
Roads in Scotland are not fast, but none of the above will take you more than an hour and a half each. Beware of the enthusiastic camera speed enforcement and the low permitted alcohol level (if you want to drink more than a sip at the distilleries, get someone else to drive).
