re: NRT staff, I know they are well regarded and thought of as the best outpost around, and I’ve experienced it firsthand. Maybe something changed recently?
Just a guess but I suspect all their best staff were airside dealing with the aftermath of the cancellations... and yes the NRT staff still roam the terminal with signs looking for pax for departing flights and expedite connecting passengers through transit security but IIRC this is all airside as well.
