You may also need to be aware that travel times in Scotland are not necessarily as short as elsewhere in the UK. The motorways and dual carriageways between major cities are fine, and you'll be able to travel at normal speeds on them. Head into the Highlands, and towards the Balmoral Estate, and suddenly even the odd A road might have passing places!

It's arguably a much more relaxed pace of life than many other places you'll visit, but the views are spectacular and you're likely to find Bed & Breakfast accommodation in converted churches or even castles in remote areas - so the payback for long days in trying to see many things is worth it.

If you're into distilleries, Speyside is the place to head for - you could visit 10 within 5 minutes drive of each other (although a designated driver may be recommended for the day!).
