This is a 747 or maybe a 777 aircraft both of which are noisy enough that the noise of the ventilation system will hide a quiet conversation quite well!

If you're in adjacent seats don't worry about taking to each other in a reasonable fashion. Ear plugs are supplied for other noise hyper sensitive passengers.
