Clearly BA has the upgrade algorithm finely tuned just to the point when people are on the cusp of turning elsewhere they lure you back to the flock (appropriate for FFs)!
It's funny because my outward flight, LHR to SFO was sold out in Y and W about a week before the flight... I had my hedges bet on an upgrade on that, with furious checks of ExpertFlyer availability etc several times a day leading up to the flight. The YVR flight however appeared quite quiet... obviously they attracted some "airport upgraders" at check-in.
