To be fair and to put things into perspective, the OP might be interested to note that same (to a smaller degree) may be said of Japanese immigration officials/policy as well. Unfortunately I have an anecdote to share on this: several years ago, a close family friend from South East Asia visited Japan at our invitation. He was detained at immigration at Narita for an hour (small room, repeated questioning, some good-cop-bad-cop melodrama), despite him having the appropriate visa and more than considerable financial means to demonstrate he was a bonafide visitor. This was repeated again on his 2 subsequent visits - not the confinement but certainly the 3rd degree attitude. Not surprisingly, he has not been back since.
