Gate 18A/B is used for this purpose (said gates are where the Jitney loads, right by the shopping concourse; you turn right instead of the "normal" left to the other gates). I've never used it before; I suspect it exists as a backup option if things get snarled down at the far end (where you have a half-dozen regional jet/turboprop gates).

I'm not surprised that JFK has an option to remote load/disembark...after the tarmac limits came into play, I could see things getting heated if a plane was about to "time out" and no appropriate gates could be cleared. I just didn't know those gates were, well, used.
