That would be the 0.3% fee charged (by law) to shops in the UK compared to 1.75% (Visa / MC) to 2.5% (Amex) in the US .......

Remember that Amex points transfer 1:2 to Hilton and Virgin miles transfer 2:3 to Hilton so you have some earning options left.
