I am waitlisted with a GUC for LAX->SYD Friday 6/29 (in a week). As of now checking the Upgrade/Standby list on the app, it shows 8 seats available in D1
Quick questions:
1) Is that reliable data (8 seats available or maybe some travelers booked in D1 simply did not select their seats yet)?
2) Knowing 8 seats show as available, we are in the low season and a week from travel, what are my chances for an upgrade?
3) Should I call the DM line to be sure no seats became available or does the system works well automatically?
On the way back also waitlisted but the app shows 20 seats available - may be easier on this leg...
Thanks for the help!
Safe flying...
I never actually realized that the app shows you seats remaining prior to check-in ... that might be a bug as I think it used to not let you go into the upgrade/standby list info until check-in. But yes based on looking at a few trips I have coming up, I think those counts are likely to be accurate. I believe the counts are for unsold seats, not just unselected seats, but not 100% sure. Right now Expertflyer says Delta is selling 7 business class seats on that flight but possible one just sold, or something else is slightly off.
No way to know your upgrade chances for sure, there could always be a rush of last-minute business (or otherwise) travelers.
The system usually works but also doesn't hurt to call the DM line and just say "I just wanted to double-check if anything has opened up with my request and to confirm that everything is waitlisted correctly?". If you see "upgrade requested" or similar language on your booking on DL.com most likely it's set up correctly. SYD is a tough route but there have been reports in the past of people's upgrades clearing a few days in advance during low season. If it doesn't clear by the time of check-in, make sure your name appears on the upgrade list in the app after you check in, and then you can only hope...good luck!
