As a rule, even if you travel on multiple airlines, the baggage allowance is based on the first flight you board. While interline tickets are relatively rare on domestic trips, they're common when going overseas. Sometimes you need to prepare for the fact that your baggage allowance might not be the same on the outbound and the return flight.
