I find this totally preposterous; how could AA let that happen and who would fall for it?
AA's site almost certainly wasn't hacked from what you describe. Did your family member reach AA.com via a link from another site or an email? Do they have any browser plugins or toolbars installed? Are they on an unfamiliar (or possibly compromised) wifi network? All of these are potential vectors for what they experienced.
