In the case of LAX-BOS, the morning and mid-day flights are going to be far more popular than the early morning and red-eye flights. With an ExpertFlyer account, you can see that these popular flights are often D0 I0 well into the future as AA knows then can command a fare premium on them. As flights get closer, they may decide to open some D and I bucket on them if there are still a significant number of unsold seats.
