I've travelled with Intrepid, Tucan and Explore. All are great options to see places that would otherwise be a hassle, and a lifetime of memories and connections.
Would I travel with a big bus tour company in Europe, probably not. But if I want to see Mongolia or Ethiopia in 2 weeks - give me a small group tour.
Even India, which I've travelled on my own in, and is easily doable, especially the more (unnecessary) money you are willing to throw at it, was a much easier travel experience in my group of 10, with a leader who took care of everything, the lines, the food, the transport.
Do some research on thorntree - that is more of a forum for travellers, FT is mainly focussed in points/chain hotel dwellers, and work flyers.
