I second the recommendation to head south to Laguna Beach. As long as you've gone that far, continue on to San Juan Capistrano. Be sure to have lunch at the Ramos House Cafe and visit the old Wild West Store - really authentic with only a minimal amount of tourist baloney.
The Mission is als very interesting - we actually have some history here in SoCal! If you want to check out a hilarious redneck bar, the Swallows Inn is across the street - a kick to go in for a drink, but don't pick any fights!
