Yeah depending on the airline and itinerary OLCI and even Kiosk check in may or may not work. Case in point I was flying YOW -> EWR -> NRT -> HKG 2 weeks ago and checked in just fine on the UA mobile app and even got my boarding passes for all flights. On the return I had a screwy itinerary: HKG -> HND, NRT -> EWR -> YOW. Mobile check in with UA said I needed to check in ANA (operator of first flight), ok, load the ANA app try checking in and it says I need to check in at airport... ugh. Get to the airport, go to the kiosk and try checking in again...same message. Have to wait 2 hours for ANA check in desk to open. They swipe my UA MP card and passport make a couple of phone calls then verbally confirm that I'm aware that I'm aware I'm responsible for getting myself from HND to NRT (I had a 11 hour layover). Once I said yes, they issued me my boarding pass for HKG -> HND and told me the other boarding passes can only be issued at NRT by UA. Decide to check the UA desktop website and to my surprise I could check in for the remaining "domestic" segments (NRT -> EWR and EWR -> YOW) and receive boarding passes for both.

Safe Travels,

James
