My recommendation is pick a hotel chain you like and make it your primary chain. When you stay there get points in the hotel program; do not earn Aeroplan miles from hotels and do not spend Aeroplan miles on hotels. IMHO hotel point redemptions are typically better “return” than Aeroplan points, plus many chains allow their free nights to count towards status, but YMMV.
