Policy is ID required for all credit card transactions that purchase a gift card and a manager override is required for any gift card transaction above $500. There may be some wording to this effect on the checkstand policies card (check the check writing table at the checkstand for this sticker).
Actual practice, can range from "cash only for gift cards" to various limits that are made up such as $200, to letting you do whatever you want with no question. Also I've never been asked for ID for a gift card transaction in any Safeway/Vons Store despite supposed "policies." Also that manager override scan card is frequently left with a cashier because the manager doesn't want to be bothered with coming up to do overrides.
